Bug Battle: Choosing the Right Parasite Prevention for Your Pet
Mosquitos, fleas, and ticks, oh my! Besides being annoying and just plain gross, these little critters can pose some serious risks to our pets. Many parasites carry diseases that can sicken or even kill pets, and, in some instances, human members of the family can also be affected.
Thanks to our temperate winters here in the Houston area, these troublesome pests are never far from our minds, or our pets’ bodies, making year-round parasite prevention of the utmost importance. Your team at Dickinson Animal Hospital is committed to helping you find the right parasite prevention products to meet your pet’s needs all year long.
Prevention is the single most important step you can take in protecting your pet from parasites. During your pet’s wellness exam, your veterinarian will work with you to determine the correct parasite prevention protocol based on your pet’s health, lifestyle, and other factors.
“One size fits all” doesn’t apply when it comes to parasite prevention. We keep the following important points in mind when selecting the best product for your pet:
- How much time your pet spends outdoors
- Sensitivities to other medications
- Your pet’s overall health
- Your pet’s age
- Your budget
- Underlying medical conditions
- Your preferences (oral vs. topical application)
Parasite Prevention Products at Dickinson
We are proud to carry a wide variety of safe and effective parasite preventives designed to meet the needs of all of our patients:
Bravecto—Because it’s a chewable, Bravecto is easy to administer and provides protection against fleas and ticks for 12 weeks. Bravecto is for dogs only, and dosage is based on your dog’s weight. It can be safely combined with a heartworm preventive.
Trifexis—Trifexis is a tasty chewable tablet for dogs that kills fleas, prevents flea infestations, prevents heartworm, and treats and controls infestations of hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm.
ProHeart—ProHeart is an injectable product for dogs that protects against heartworm for 6 months. Many pet owners prefer the convenience of ProHeart since it does not need to be administered as often as oral or topical medications.
Feline Revolution—This topical medication protects cats from fleas, heartworm, and intestinal parasites. Because it’s safe to touch immediately after administration, many cat owners prefer Feline Revolution as opposed to over-the-counter medications, which generally have a 4–24 hour “don’t touch” window.
Sentinel—This monthly chewable product protects dogs against heartworm, fleas, whipworms, hookworms, and roundworms. The flea prevention portion of Sentinel only protects against the eggs and does not kill adults, so an additional product may be needed if your dog is experiencing an active flea infestation.
Parasites can wreak havoc on pets, and having a plan for prevention is key when it comes to supporting your pet’s long-term health. Choosing a parasite preventive for your pet shouldn’t be complicated. The staff at Dickinson Animal Hospital & Pet Wellness Center is happy to help you select the right product for your furry friend.
